Aurizon chooses Rail-Flow to drive digital growth in intermodal logistics

Aurizon, Australia’s largest rail freight operator, is rapidly expanding its intermodal freight business. To support this growth and deliver on its nationwide Containerised Freight initiative, the company set out to modernise its processes and create a seamless digital experience for customers and partners. Aurizon selected Rail-Flow as the platform of choice to digitalise bookings, streamline demand planning and provide real-time visibility across its network.
Highlights of this success:
- Digital self-service for customers, replacing manual booking processes.
- End-to-end real-time visibility across shipments, boosting service reliability.
- Capacity-informed planning across key intermodal corridors.
- A scalable platform that supports Aurizon’s nationwide Containerised Freight expansion.
“Rail-Flow has become a key partner in the digital transformation of our intermodal business. Their platform enables us to offer our customers a modern, transparent and reliable service experience while supporting the rapid growth of our Landbridging strategy.”
Initial situation: Growing volumes require a unified customer experience
With rising container volumes and increasing customer expectations, Aurizon faced the challenge of transforming largely manual booking and communication processes. Orders were often placed via email or phone, while shipment visibility was limited. This created risks for on-time performance, complicated planning activities and impacted the overall service experience. To support its long-term Containerised Freight strategy, Aurizon needed a unified digital platform that would simplify collaboration, increase transparency and scale with its growth.
Solution: A fully integrated digital ecosystem powered by Rail-Flow
To address these needs, Aurizon implemented the Rail-Flow Customer Portal together with the Intermodal Transport Management System (ITMS). The solution was integrated with Aurizon’s internal downstream systems to ensure end-to-end data consistency.
Rail-Flow introduced digital booking capabilities, automated container slot allocation and truck terminal slot booking, reducing manual effort and improving operational coordination.
Additional enhancements included a dedicated portal for third-party trucking companies, specialised handling workflows for dangerous goods and transparent reporting features for both customers and internal teams. With Rail-Flow, Aurizon established a digital ecosystem that connects all stakeholders through a single user-friendly interface.
Impact: More transparency, higher efficiency and a scalable foundation for Landbridging
The introduction of Rail-Flow has enabled Aurizon to offer customers a modern, digital self-service experience with real-time shipment visibility. Planning teams now benefit from capacity-informed forecasting and improved decision-making across key transport corridors.
At the same time, automated processes help reduce manual workload, minimise errors and support reliable on-time performance.
With Rail-Flow, Aurizon has created a scalable digital foundation that supports its national Containerised Freight ambitions and strengthens its ability to serve a growing customer base with speed, transparency and reliability.
