EU freight transport has a growth rate between 2005 and 2030 of 49%. The majority of transport is still covered by road which causes detrimental environmental problems as it releases several million tons of gases each year into the atmosphere and air pollutant emissions. Air pollution is the main cause of human health impairment causing ~500000 premature deaths per year in Europe. About 30% of the increasing transport emissions are estimated to be caused by freight transport.
The project Facilitation Intermodal Transport (FIT) targets the reduction of transport-related air pollution in the EU by introducing an integrated solution for facilitating intermodal transports by SMEs for the first time. The aim is to shift freight volumes from road to more sustainable rail transport and to help decouple the environmental impacts of transport from economic growth.
